Tales from the Roost: Head Shot

This is Puff, the Blue Cochin who lives in the red coop up on the hill.  If you can keep a secret, I'll confess that she is one of my two favorite hens - even though she is an unreliable layer and spends half of her life broody.  Her story can be found here.  Happy hump day from the girls in the little red coop.

How do you get them un-broody?? I have two (illegal) hens and one's gone broody and the other is acting as her moody midwife. Neither are laying. I acutally posted about it today....I need eggs!

And just to clarify, by illegal I mean that my HOA doesn't allow poultry...but I'm fighting the man :o)

Fight on, girlfriend! To break a broody, they say to lock them out of the nesting box. I tried that with mine and she just bedded down in the run. I've also read to also put them in a cage with a wire bottom so that that cold air gets underneath them. Oh, and ice in the nesting box too. I've never done the other two. Too much work for someone as lazy as me! ;-)

I've noticed with mine that I need to break her in the first few days or it just ain't happening. Usually, I let it ride because I have 5 chickens and plenty of eggs. BUT, what did work for me was, within a day or two of going broody, I stuck her in a dog kennel in the garage. A day or so later, and she was done being broody and back to laying eggs.

What kind of hens are your girls?

Thanks for the advice! My broody girl, Daisy, is a Chantecler and her moody midwife Olivia is an Ameraucana. My daughter, who names everything in our house, bestowed those monikers. I still giggle when I call my chicken Olivia :)

Love the names! It is so funny to give chickens big names. My son named one of ours Minerva Louise. Anyway, I hope you get some eggs out of those girls as a broody and a moody aren't very helpful - unless you are trying to hatch chicks!
